Extreme Virtual Reality

EXTREME Virtual Reality (EXVR) Science Fair

Re-introducing students to Science and Engineering topics using the medium of Virtual Reality

Presenters:

  • Andrew Dasys – EXVR Coordinator
  • Julie Mongeau – Grade 12 student from Ecole secondaire catholique l'Horizon, Sudbury
  • Haley Sanderson – Grade 11 student from Lockerby Composite School, Sudbury

The EXTREME Virtual Reality is about reintroducing students to topics in science and engineering using the medium of Virtual Reality.  The project teams students up with industry, academic and IT mentors to help them understand their project.  It gives students a chance to use the resources, skills and knowledge they have gained in the classroom to solve real world problems.  The project is funded in part by the Ministry of Research and Innovation through the Youth and Science Technology Outreach Program (YSTOP), and is run through MIRARCO.

This presentation will feature three main presenters; first the EXVR Coordinator explaining how this project has exposed more then 700 students to the concept of using the technology of virtual reality to better visualize research projects.  It will feature the winner of this years’ EXVR project Julie Mongeau, who will be demonstrating how she has used 3D software to build and animate the reaction of cells to be used as a teaching tool.  The third presenter will be Haley Sanderson who was runner-up in the EXVR Science Fair competition, focusing her research on Chiari-1 a rare brain malformation.  She will use a 3D model of the human brain to explain and communicate her research.
